Female Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus)

Hunts by flying at low speeds just above low growing vegetation.
Uses the element of surprise attack, flying in zigzag patterns.
The Northern Harrier is the only hawk able to locate prey using only acoustic clues.

Barred Owl (Strix varia)

Breeding habitats of this large owl (53cm) are dense woods across Canada, United States and south to mountains of Mexico.
Barred Owls don't migrate. In winter, males leave their territories when prey species are scarce.

Eastern Chipmunk (Tamias striatus)

Last preparation before hibernation for this female Chipmunk of 2 years.
These pictures was taken on November 2 and she is now in hibernation since November 7.

Immature Green Heron (Butorides virescens)

Green Heron usually forages from a perch. They feeds on fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects and mollusks.

Southern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys volans)

The "Flying" Squirrel actually does not fly. Instead, it glides downward by spreading its limbs and stretching the loose folds of skin that extend between the ankles of its front and hind legs.

Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus)

Yesterday, the September 8, I have seen a monarch butterfly in my backyard for the first time since the dramatic decline in the monarch population in 2013.
I planted Milkweed and nectar-producing plants to help the monarch butterfly.
I invite you to create a monarch oasis in your backyard.
